The Pain Management Clinic is managed by the anaesthesia service and aims to ameliorate or treat chronic pain and to increase the quality of life of dogs and cats using an individualised and multi-modal pharmacological and interventional approach.
Why to refer a case to the Pain Management Clinic?
If you are a veterinary professional, you could ask advice or refer a case for a wide range of disorder such as:
- Musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., osteoarthritis secondary to hip dysplasia or degenerative joint disease, pull-tail injuries)
- Dermatological conditions (e.g., chronic otitis, atopy, pododermatitis)
- Odontostomatological diseases (e.g., orofacial pain syndrome, gingivitis, stomatitis)
- Cancer (e.g., unresectable osteosarcoma, multiple myeloma, oral carcinoma)
- Neurological diseases (e.g., degenerative disc diseases, degenerative myelopathy, stenosis of the spinal canal)
We offer a one-hour first consultation which includes the discussion of the pet’s history, medications, behaviour, mobility, gait, diet, and exercise regime. Following a physical examination and chronic pain assessment with specific tools (i.e., von Frey filaments), we will provide a patient-based analgesic and ancillary plan, based on a multimodal pharmacological approach, acupuncture, or analgesic procedures under general anaesthesia such as ultrasound-guided local nerve blocks or epidural steroid injections. The plan can also include additional tests such as haematology and biochemistry, advanced diagnostic images (i.e., CT or MRI scans, radiographs) or referral to other specialists such as orthopaedics, neurologists, and physiotherapists.
We can further offer a one-hour follow-up appointment to assess the progression of the plan and titrate it if necessary.
